Greenhouse Staging

Greenhouse staging is mainly used to support plants. It is also used for potting and other tasks related to planting in the greenhouse.

Wood Staging

The traditional type is a free standing bench of slatted wood. The bench dimensions vary as much as greenhouse sizes. Most of the time though, a 30 in (75 cm) high x 2 ft 3 in wide bench will do for a medium sized greenhouse. This height permits easy access to the structure.

The slats need to be 4 in (10 cm) wide x 1 in (2.5 cm) between the slats. Most of these benches also have a shelf below it. This is used for storing tools, fertilizer and other items.

This type of greenhouse staging requires top notch wood. It must also be resistant to water damage. That being said, no wooden bench is totally water proof. Another problem is these structures can be heavy.

Aluminum Staging

The problems cited above have made aluminum staging a more popular choice. They don’t have the problems associated with wood staging. They are also low maintenance and quite portable. Aluminum staging come in many forms.

Their shelves are typically flat. However some have trays intended for growing seedlings. If yours have flat shelves, capillary matting can be placed there without problems.

Variations in Design

Greenhouse staging incorporate different looks, depending on the manufacturer. Aluminum staging are often designed with particular greenhouse concepts in mind. Several can be linked to the greenhouse minus the need for supports.

The advantage of this design is it provides space below to be used. Both wood and aluminum staging are available in different colors.

The Capillary Bench

This is a special type of bench with raised edges (about 5 cm). The surface has capillary matting. This goes over the bench’s side straight to a vat of water. What the capillary matting does is soak up the water. Any pot put on this surface will absorb the water and thus stay damp.

The advantage of this greenhouse staging design is obvious: it keeps all the pots watered. By mixing in some fertilizer into the water, your plants will get fertilized at the same time.

Buying Tips

The aluminum or capillary benches are the most practical solutions. If you want to buy wood staging, look for those that provide the most resistance to water. If you get quality wood staging, this can serve your for many years. The aluminum staging are available in single or 3 tier versions. The finishes also vary.

If you’re not sure what to get, ask the people at the garden center. If you travel often, a capillary bench will ensure your plants stay watered. It’s easier to compare the different benches when you shop online. Whichever site you choose, be sure to check out the specs so you can get the one you really need.

Greenhouse staging simplifies a lot of the tasks involved in planting. By taking the time to look for the one that fits your specifications, watering and cultivating will be easier to do.
